Why being mentioned now matters more than being linked

The link-building industry is still selling links. Meanwhile the thing that moves the needle is being talked about at all — with or without a hyperlink.

Media Puppies · · Updated

For twenty years the currency of SEO was the backlink, not brand mentions. Get enough sites to link to you and you rank. That is still partly true, and it is also increasingly beside the point.

What has changed is that both Google and the AI assistants now build a picture of your business from every mention of it — hyperlink or not. A paragraph naming you in an industry roundup, a Reddit thread recommending you, a podcast transcript, a review someone left. None of those need to be links to count.

Why the shift happened

Two reasons, one old and one new.

The old one: links became unreliable as a signal because they were so easy to buy. Any system that can be purchased at scale eventually stops being trusted.

The new one: language models do not traverse links the way a crawler does. They absorb text. When a model decides whether to recommend your business, it is drawing on everything written about you — and a sentence saying you are the best option in your city is a strong signal even with no anchor tag attached to it.

A link tells a machine you exist. A mention tells it what you are, and whether anyone thinks you are good.

Which brand mentions actually count

  • Being named in a comparison or roundup article in your category.
  • A genuine recommendation in a forum or community thread.
  • Reviews with text, not just stars. The text is the part that gets read by machines.
  • Being quoted in a news piece or trade publication.
  • A podcast or video where your business is named and described.
  • Directory and association listings — low value individually, useful for consistency.

The consistency problem

Here is where most businesses lose before they start. If you are described differently everywhere — a marketing agency here, a creative studio there, a web company in an old listing — you are hard to summarise. Hard to summarise means rarely recommended, because a model will reach for a competitor it can describe in one confident sentence.

Fix this first, because it is free:

  1. Write one sentence describing what you do, who for, and where.
  2. Use that exact sentence on your site, every social profile, every directory listing and every press mention you can influence.
  3. Correct the old listings that say something else. Yes, all of them.

How to earn mentions without buying links

  • Publish something quotable. Original numbers from your own work are the most linkable and mentionable thing a small business can produce. Nobody can copy your data.
  • Answer questions where your customers actually ask them. Not with a link drop — with a genuinely useful answer, signed with who you are.
  • Ask happy customers for a written review, not just a star rating. Specifically ask what problem you solved. That sentence is the asset.
  • Be available to journalists and podcasters in your niche. Boring, slow, and it compounds.
  • Get listed properly in the industry associations and directories that already rank for your category terms.

What still does not work

Buying link packages. It was a bad idea when links were the whole game, and now it is a bad idea that also does not address the thing that matters. Cheap links are the fastest route to a manual penalty, and a penalty takes far longer to undo than rankings take to build.

How to track it

Set up alerts for your brand name and check monthly. You are looking for two things: how often you are mentioned, and whether the description attached to you is the one you chose. The second is the one most people never check, and it is the one that decides what an AI assistant says about you.

Questions people ask

Do unlinked brand mentions help SEO?

They appear to contribute, though not in the direct, measurable way a link does. A search engine that repeatedly sees your name discussed alongside a topic has more evidence that you are a real entity in that field, and that evidence is what AI answers draw on too.

Are brand mentions better than backlinks?

No — they are additional. A relevant link from a trusted site is still the strongest single signal available. Mentions matter because they are far more achievable at volume, and because they influence surfaces where links are not shown at all.

How do I earn mentions without buying them?

Publish something quotable, such as original data or a tool. Answer journalist requests. Turn up in industry roundups, podcasts and community threads where your customers already are. Each of those produces mentions that were not paid for and do not look it.

How do I track brand mentions?

Set alerts on your company name and your founders, check Search Console for branded query volume over time, and search your name periodically with quotes. Rising branded search is the single clearest sign the mentions are landing.
