Is ChatGPT sending you traffic? How to check in five minutes

Most businesses have no idea whether AI assistants send them visitors, because the traffic hides in a bucket nobody looks at. It takes five minutes to find out.

Media Puppies · · Updated

ChatGPT traffic is real now, because AI assistants have started linking out. When someone asks for a recommendation and the answer cites a source, a share of those people click. That is a referral, and it lands in your analytics like any other — you just have to know where to look.

Where ChatGPT traffic shows up in analytics

Look at your referral sources and search for these hostnames:

SourceWhat it usually means
chatgpt.comSomeone clicked a citation inside a ChatGPT answer
perplexity.aiPerplexity cited you as a source
gemini.google.comA Gemini answer linked to you
copilot.microsoft.comCopilot cited your page
claude.aiA cited link followed from a Claude conversation

Any tool that records the referrer will show the same hostnames — a first-party log, your server access logs, or an analytics product. In Google Analytics, check Acquisition then Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to session source, and search for the names above.

Expect the number to look disappointing

For most Indian businesses this traffic is currently somewhere between a rounding error and a few percent of sessions. That is not a reason to ignore it, for two reasons.

First, it is growing fast enough that the number you see this quarter is not the number you will see next year. Second — and this is the part that matters — it tends to convert better than average. Someone arriving from an AI answer has already had your business recommended to them. They are not browsing; they are checking.

Treat AI referral traffic like a warm introduction, not like search traffic. The person arrived pre-sold.

The bigger number you cannot see

Here is the uncomfortable part. Clicks are the small half of the story. The large half is the people who got their answer, never clicked, and either remembered your name or did not.

There is no report for that. The only proxy we have found that works is the oldest one in marketing: a single question on your form or after a sale — how did you hear about us? When people start typing some version of ChatGPT recommended you, you will know long before any dashboard tells you.

What to do once you find it

  1. Find which pages get cited. Whatever they are, that format is working — write more like them.
  2. Check those pages convert. A cited page that is a dead end wastes the introduction. Give it a clear next step.
  3. Add the question to your form. One field, optional. It will outperform your attribution setup.
  4. Work on being citable. That is a bigger topic, and we went through it properly in how to show up inside AI answers.

One thing not to do

Do not block AI crawlers in a panic. Some businesses have, reasoning that assistants take their content and give nothing back. That is a defensible position for a publisher who sells ad impressions. For a business that sells a service, blocking the crawler means the assistant cannot recommend you, and the recommendation is worth far more than the page view.

Questions people ask

How do I see ChatGPT traffic in analytics?

Look for chatgpt.com in your referral sources, alongside perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. In GA4, open Acquisition then Traffic acquisition, switch the dimension to session source and search those hostnames.

Why is the number so small?

Because most assistant answers are never clicked. The user got what they needed in the answer. The referral number counts only the minority who followed a link, so it understates the influence by a long way.

Does ChatGPT traffic convert well?

Usually better than average, because the person arrives having already been told you are a reasonable answer. They are further through the decision than someone who clicked a cold search result.

What should I do about it?

Treat it as evidence that assistants are citing you and keep producing the kind of content they lift: specific, self-contained answers. What is not worth doing is building a strategy around a referral number that measures a fraction of the effect.
