If you are not tracking calls, you are not tracking anything

The account says you are losing money. The vans are fully booked. Both cannot be true, and the account is the one that is wrong.

Home services runs on the phone, which is why call tracking is not optional. Somebody with a leak does not fill in a form and wait. They tap the number.

And yet the majority of home services accounts we audit measure form submissions, treat calls as unmeasured, and then conclude that paid search does not work. The business is busy. The report says otherwise. The report is missing most of the leads.

What call tracking actually gives you

Dynamic number insertion swaps the phone number on your site depending on how the visitor arrived, so a call can be attributed to the campaign, ad group and keyword that produced it.

Three things follow:

  • Real cost per lead. Including the majority of your leads.
  • Keyword-level truth. Which search terms produce conversations and which produce people asking whether you cover an area you do not.
  • Recordings. Which is where the negative keyword list actually comes from.

Call tracking shows that not all calls are leads

A twelve-second call is a wrong number. Set a duration threshold — thirty to sixty seconds is a reasonable starting point — and only count calls above it as conversions.

Where volume supports it, push a "qualified call" conversion back to Google so bidding optimises toward conversations rather than ringtones. This single change moves more budget to the right keywords than any bid adjustment.

Listen to twenty recordings. You will find three keywords to pause and one service you did not know people were asking for.

The endgame: send back job value

A gutter clean and a roof replacement are not the same conversion, and treating them as one is why budget drifts toward cheap jobs.

Feeding booked job value from your scheduling system back into the ad account lets value-based bidding pull toward the work you actually want. It is more setup than anything else here, and it is the difference between an account that generates leads and one that generates revenue.

Service area is a campaign decision

A thirty-mile radius drawn around your office includes water, farmland and postcodes your crews refuse to drive to. Those clicks convert into calls you decline — which means they cost money and never appear as a problem in the account, because the conversion happened.

Target the areas you actually serve and exclude the ones you do not. On most accounts this is the single largest source of silent waste.

Split emergency from planned

"Boiler repair near me at 11pm" and "bathroom renovation ideas" are different buyers with different urgency, different value and different hours. Mixed in one campaign, the emergency intent subsidises the research intent and you cannot see either clearly.

Separate campaigns, separate budgets, separate landing pages, separate dayparting.

Pace to capacity, not to budget

The constraint in home services is crews, not clicks. Generating more demand than you can service is not a win — it is a cost with no revenue and a reputation problem when nobody calls back.

Pull back when the diary fills. Push hard into gaps. Hold budget for the first cold snap, when heating demand and every competitor’s bid rise on the same morning.

Our full approach is on the home services page, and the PPC forecast calculator will tell you quickly whether a lead price supports your average job value.

Questions people ask

What does call tracking actually give you?

It attributes each call to the campaign, ad group and keyword that produced it, so you can stop guessing which half of the spend works. With recordings you also learn which calls were real jobs and which were suppliers, wrong numbers or existing customers.

Will swapping the number hurt my local SEO?

Not if it is done with dynamic number insertion, which shows the tracking number only to visitors from ads while search engines and directories still see your real one. Replacing the number in your citations is what causes problems.

How long should a call be to count as a lead?

Most home services businesses settle somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds, then check recordings to confirm the threshold is not counting receptionist transfers or hang-ups. Pick the number from your own calls rather than from a default.

What is the next step after tracking calls?

Send the job value back to the ad platform as an offline conversion. Optimising towards calls buys calls; optimising towards booked revenue buys customers, and it is the single biggest improvement available to most home services accounts.
