Searching for an SEO company in India returns thousands of results that use the same vocabulary: on-page, off-page, technical, authority. The work behind those words ranges from a monthly ranking spreadsheet to a team that rewrites your site and builds the pages that bring buyers. Both are called SEO. Only one grows a business.
Here are the nine checks we would run on any SEO company, including ourselves, before signing.
How to choose an SEO company: the nine checks
1. Ask what they will change on your site in month one. Real SEO work is visible: pages rewritten, new pages built, technical fixes shipped. An answer that is all audits and reports with no changes is a company that sells reports.
2. Ask which keywords they would not chase. A good company has an opinion about intent. It will tell you that a high-volume term brings students and job seekers, not buyers, and that a smaller term with purchase language is worth more. A company that promises page one for the biggest term in your category has not thought about who searches it.
3. Ask how they report. Rankings are an input. Organic enquiries, calls and sales by landing page are the output. If the report cannot show which organic pages produced which leads, the company is not measuring the thing you are paying for. Search Console and your analytics can do this; a company that does not use them that way has chosen not to.
4. Ask where the links come from. Link building is where most of the risk in SEO lives. Ask for examples of links built for other clients, and ask whether they buy them. Bought links on private networks work until they do not, and the penalty lands on your domain, not the agency's.
5. Ask who writes the content and who checks it. AI-assisted drafting is normal now. Unreviewed AI content published at volume is how sites collapse in a core update; does Google penalise AI content explains what actually happens. The question is whether a person with knowledge of your business checks every page before it goes live.
6. Ask for a case study with numbers you can verify. Organic traffic graphs are easy to produce. Ask for the business result, the timeframe, and whether you can speak to the client. How to evaluate agency case studies has the full list of questions.
7. Ask what happens to the work if you leave. Content, pages and technical fixes live on your site and stay. Links and accounts built in the agency's name may not. Get it in writing.
8. Ask how long before you should judge it. The honest answer is months, not weeks, and it varies by how competitive the category is and how much the site needs fixing. An agency promising results in thirty days is either doing paid ads and calling it SEO or planning to show you a ranking for a term nobody searches.
9. Ask what they would do with the same money in paid search instead. A good SEO company will sometimes tell you that for your situation, paid search is the faster answer and SEO should wait. That honesty is the strongest signal on this list.
What the first three months should contain
A technical fix list shipped, not just documented. Buying-intent pages written or rewritten for the terms that matter. Tracking that attributes organic enquiries to pages. A monthly report that leads with enquiries and names the next three pages. We described the fee side of this in what SEO costs in India; the work side is above.
If you want to see what the audit stage looks like before you choose anyone, our free SEO audit gives you the fix list and the keyword map in plain language, and you can take it to whichever company you choose. If you want an SEO company in India that is judged on leads, our own approach is on the SEO services page.
Questions people ask before hiring
How do I know if an SEO company is legitimate?
Ask what they will change on your site in month one, where their links come from, and how they attribute organic enquiries to pages. Legitimate companies answer all three specifically. Companies that sell reports answer with audits and rankings.
How long does SEO take in India?
Months, and it depends on the category and the state of the site. Technical fixes and intent-led pages can move enquiries within a quarter in less competitive categories; competitive categories take longer. Anyone promising results in thirty days is describing something else.
Should an SEO company guarantee rankings?
No. Nobody controls Google, and a guarantee usually means ranking for a term chosen because it is easy rather than because it brings buyers. Ask for accountability on organic enquiries instead.
Is SEO or paid search better for my business?
It depends on how urgently you need leads and how competitive the search terms are. Paid search produces enquiries within days; SEO compounds over months. A company that only sells one of them will always recommend that one.
