What is ROAS? It stands for return on ad spend, and it measures how much revenue your advertising brought in for every unit of money spent on it. The formula is revenue from ads divided by ad spend. If campaigns cost 50,000 and produce 2 lakh in sales, ROAS is 4, usually written 4x or 400%.
So what is ROAS good for? Comparing campaigns, ad sets and creatives, and spotting quickly when something stops working. What it cannot do on its own is tell you whether the ads are profitable, because it ignores every cost except the ads themselves.
What is ROAS and how is it calculated
ROAS = revenue attributed to ads ÷ ad spend
Two rules keep the number honest. First, both inputs must cover the same campaigns and the same dates. Second, know which attribution window the revenue comes from. Meta and Google each count a sale if the buyer clicked or viewed an ad within their own window, so the same sale can appear in both reports. You can run the sum with your own figures in the ROAS calculator.
A worked example
Say an online store sells a product at 1,500. After product cost, shipping, payment fees and returns, 600 is left per order, a gross margin of 40%.
- The store spends 30,000 on Meta in a week and the platform reports 75 orders, which is 1,12,500 in revenue.
- ROAS is 1,12,500 ÷ 30,000 = 3.75.
- Gross profit on those orders is 75 × 600 = 45,000. After the 30,000 of ads, 15,000 is left.
Now drop the margin to 25% and keep everything else the same. Gross profit becomes 28,125, and the same 3.75 ROAS now loses 1,875 a week. The ROAS did not change. The business result flipped.
What is a good ROAS?
A good ROAS is any ROAS above your break-even ROAS, and break-even comes straight from margin:
break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin
At a 40% margin, break-even is 2.5. At 25% it is 4. This is why industry averages are close to useless as targets. A full calculation with shipping, returns and fees as separate lines is in the break-even ROAS guide.
A target ROAS then adds the profit you want on top of break-even. If repeat purchase is strong, some brands accept a first-order ROAS at or just below break-even, because the second and third orders carry the profit.
ROAS vs ROI vs MER
| Metric | What it compares | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| ROAS | Ad revenue with ad spend | Decisions inside one ad platform |
| ROI | Profit with total investment | Whether the activity is worth doing at all |
| MER | All revenue with all ad spend | Setting the overall budget |
Because each platform credits itself, the sum of platform ROAS figures is almost always higher than reality. MER, built from your own sales records, is the check. Platform ROAS vs blended MER explains how to read the two together.
Common ROAS mistakes
- Mixing scopes. Dividing all store revenue by Meta spend alone gives a flattering number that is not ROAS.
- Judging too early. Sales arrive days after the click, so yesterday's ROAS will rise as late conversions are counted. Read campaigns over at least a week.
- Comparing channels with different windows. A seven-day click window on one platform and a one-day window on another are not comparable.
- Forgetting returns and cancellations. Platforms count the order when it is placed. If a share of orders comes back or never gets delivered, real ROAS is lower than reported.
- Using revenue that includes tax. Keep revenue and margin on the same basis, either both with GST or both without.
How to improve ROAS without shrinking the business
The quickest ROAS gains often come from cutting spend to the best retargeting audiences, and that usually shrinks total profit. Better levers are a landing page that converts more visitors, higher order value through bundles, and fresh creative that brings in new buyers. When scaling, raise budgets in steps and watch whether ROAS holds; scaling ad spend without losing ROAS covers the method.
If you would like someone to set ROAS targets from your actual margins and manage campaigns against them, that is the first thing our performance marketing team does on a new account.
Questions people ask before hiring
What is ROAS in simple terms?
Return on ad spend: the revenue your ads produced divided by what the ads cost. A ROAS of 4 means every unit spent brought back four in revenue.
What is a good ROAS for ecommerce?
Anything above your break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by your gross margin. A 50% margin breaks even at 2, a 25% margin at 4.
Is ROAS the same as ROI?
No. ROAS compares revenue with ad spend, while ROI compares profit with the total investment. A campaign can have a high ROAS and a negative ROI.
Why is my Meta ROAS higher than my real sales?
Platforms credit a sale to any ad clicked or viewed within their attribution window, and several platforms can claim the same sale. Compare with total revenue from your store.
