Featured snippets used to be a nice extra. Now the same structure that earns one also makes a page quotable by AI assistants — which is where a growing share of research now starts.
The pattern that wins featured snippets
Answer first, justify second
Put a direct, complete answer in the first two sentences under the heading. Then explain. Content that builds to its point over four paragraphs gives a machine nothing clean to lift.
Headings that are questions
Not "Pricing considerations" — "How much does it cost for a 2BHK?" Use the phrasing a person would actually type or say.
Match the format to the query
- "How to" → numbered steps
- "What is" → a 40–60 word definition paragraph
- "Best / types of" → a bulleted list
- Comparisons → a table
If removing the surrounding page would leave the answer still making sense, it's quotable.
Specifics beat adjectives
Numbers, ranges and conditions get quoted. "Significantly cheaper" doesn't. "Typically ₹2.8L–₹4.2L for a 2BHK, six weeks" does.
How to find opportunities
- In Search Console, find queries where you get impressions but few clicks — you're on the page but not winning the answer.
- Search those queries. See what's in the answer box and what format it uses.
- Rewrite your section in that format, answer-first.
- Add FAQ schema if the page genuinely has questions.
This is editing, not new content — usually the highest-return hour in a content programme. It's also most of what getting cited by AI assistants requires.
Writing a paragraph that gets lifted
The mechanics are narrow. A paragraph snippet is usually 40 to 60 words, so a two-hundred-word preamble cannot be used no matter how good it is. Write the answer as a self-contained block directly under a question heading, then expand underneath.
Compare these. "There are several factors that influence what you should expect to pay, and the answer depends on your requirements" — unusable, says nothing, cannot stand alone. Versus: "A modular kitchen in Gurugram typically costs ₹2.8 lakh to ₹4.2 lakh for a 2BHK, installed in about six weeks. Laminate finishes sit at the lower end; acrylic and lacquered glass push toward the top." That is quotable, specific, and complete without the page around it.
The discipline is uncomfortable because it means giving the answer away immediately rather than making people read for it. That is the trade: you lose the dramatic reveal and you gain the position.
Why this matters more than it used to
The same structure now serves two destinations. A search engine lifts it into the answer box; an AI assistant lifts it into a generated answer and, increasingly, cites the source. Content written to build slowly toward a conclusion gives neither system anything clean to extract.
The practical implication is that "position one" is no longer the only goal worth having. Being the passage a machine quotes when someone asks a question in an assistant is a separate, growing channel, and it rewards the same writing.
Finding the opportunities you already have
- Open Search Console, Performance, and filter to queries with more than a hundred impressions.
- Sort by CTR ascending. High impressions with low clicks means you rank on the page but something above you is answering the question.
- Search those queries manually and look at what occupies the answer box.
- Rewrite your section to match that format — table, steps, list or definition — and to answer in the first two sentences.
This is editing, not writing. The page already ranks; you are changing its shape, which is a far cheaper intervention than a new article.
Questions people ask
How do I get a featured snippet?
Put a direct, self-contained answer of 40 to 60 words immediately under a heading phrased as the question, then expand below it. Google lifts a passage that stands alone, so an answer that depends on the paragraph above it cannot be used.
How long should the answer paragraph be?
Around 40 to 60 words. Shorter tends to be too thin to be useful on its own; much longer gets truncated in a way that loses the point. Lists and tables follow the same rule — make the first few items complete in themselves.
Do featured snippets still matter with AI Overviews?
More than before. The same answer-first structure that earns a snippet is what makes a passage easy for an AI answer to quote and attribute, so one piece of formatting work now serves both surfaces.
How do I find snippet opportunities?
Look in Search Console for queries where you already rank in positions two to eight and the query is phrased as a question. Those are pages Google already trusts; they usually only need the answer moved to the top and a heading rewritten.
