Justdial and IndiaMART enquiries vs your own website

You are not buying a customer. You are buying the right to be one of five people calling them.

Media Puppies · · Updated

For a large share of Indian service and B2B businesses, IndiaMART leads are not one channel among several — they are the whole pipeline. That works until it doesn't, and the way it stops working is always the same: the price goes up, the lead quality goes down, and there is no alternative to switch to.

What IndiaMART leads actually buy you

The model is lead distribution, not lead generation. A buyer submits one enquiry and the platform sells it to several suppliers. That has three consequences that have nothing to do with how good your business is:

  • You compete on response speed, not merit. The supplier who calls within ninety seconds wins disproportionately.
  • The buyer is fielding several calls and is primed to treat the conversation as a price comparison.
  • You are renting, not building. Stop paying and the pipeline stops that month. Nothing you paid for accumulates.

A portal lead is rented. An organic lead is owned. The difference only becomes visible the month you try to stop paying rent.

Work out your real cost per customer

Most businesses know what the subscription costs and not what a customer costs. Do this calculation once, properly:

  1. Annual subscription, plus any paid lead credits.
  2. Divide by the number of usable leads — not total leads. Strip out the wrong-category, the unreachable and the competitors checking prices.
  3. Divide by your close rate on those.
  4. Add the cost of the staff time spent calling the ones that went nowhere.

The number is frequently several times what people assume, because the denominator everyone uses is total enquiries rather than real ones. Our lead funnel calculator does this arithmetic if you have the figures to hand.

What organic gives you that a portal cannot

That last row is why nobody should switch off the portal on day one. Organic is the channel that makes you less dependent in a year; it does not pay this quarter's salaries.

The pages that replace portal demand

Portal buyers search in a specific way, and those searches are winnable because the portals rank for category terms rather than for detail.

  • Product plus specification. “[product] 304 grade price”, “[product] 5 hp supplier”. Long, precise, and under-served.
  • Product plus city. The intersection where portals are strong but beatable with real local detail.
  • Price and cost pages. The single most searched thing your buyers want and the thing almost no Indian supplier site publishes.
  • Comparison pages. “X vs Y for [application]”. High intent, low competition, and it positions you as the expert rather than the cheapest.
  • Bulk and MOQ questions. Minimum order, lead time, customisation. These are the questions that precede every serious B2B enquiry.

Run both, deliberately

The sensible plan is not a switch, it is a shift. Keep the portal subscription. Start building the five or six pages above. Track cost per closed customer from each channel separately — not cost per lead, which flatters the portal. When organic is producing customers at a lower cost per close, reduce the portal spend by a step and put it into content. Repeat.

Most businesses that do this never drop the portal entirely, and that is fine. The goal is not purity, it is not being at the mercy of somebody else's renewal price.

We optimise to qualified pipeline rather than form fills; here is how that works.

Questions people ask

Are IndiaMART leads worth it?

They produce enquiries quickly, which is a real benefit when nothing else does. The cost is that the same enquiry goes to several suppliers at once, so you are competing on price from the first message, and the price of the subscription keeps rising.

How do I work out my real cost per customer?

Take the annual subscription plus any paid credits, divide by the number of enquiries that became paying customers, not by the number of enquiries. Most businesses doing this for the first time find the figure several times what they assumed.

Should I leave the portals?

Not abruptly. Build the site and the organic enquiries alongside the subscription, then reduce the portal spend as your own channel covers more of the pipeline. Leaving before the replacement exists is how businesses end up renewing at a worse rate.

What does my own site give me that a portal cannot?

An enquiry nobody else received, a relationship the marketplace cannot price you out of, and the ability to publish specifications, prices and proof in your own words. It takes longer to build and it does not get more expensive every year.
