Does a Google Partner badge mean anything

Platform badges measure things that are easy to measure. Whether an agency is good at your account is not one of them.

Media Puppies ·

Almost every agency website carries a Google Partner badge and a row of others beside it. They are not fake, and they are not meaningless — but they measure a narrower thing than most buyers assume, and knowing what that thing is makes them much more useful.

What the Google Partner badge requires

Broadly, three conditions: a minimum level of ad spend managed across the agency's accounts over a rolling window, a minimum number of staff holding current Google Ads certifications, and a performance threshold based on Google's own optimisation score and account health signals.

Each of those is a real bar. None of them is a measure of whether your account will do well. Spend volume is a size test. Certifications are exams, sat in a browser, that reward knowledge of the interface. And the performance component leans on Google's optimisation score, which rewards adopting Google's recommendations — not all of which are in your interest. Broad match expansion and automatic campaign upgrades both raise that score.

The badge tells you an agency is large enough, certified enough, and compliant enough with Google's own recommendations. Two of those three are useful signals. The third sometimes points the wrong way.

Premier Partner is a ranking, not a grade

Premier status is limited to a capped share of partners in each country, which makes it a relative standing rather than an absolute standard. It genuinely indicates scale and a working relationship with Google, including a named rep. That rep can be useful — faster escalation on policy problems, early access to features, occasional credits. It can also be a channel through which Google's priorities arrive in your account.

Meta Business Partner is a different shape

Meta's programme leans more on verified technical capability and category specialisms than on a single spend threshold. It is worth slightly more as a signal of competence on the platform and slightly less as a signal of size. As with Google, it says nothing about whether the agency is good at your category or your economics.

What a badge is actually good for

  • Escalation. A rep relationship shortens the path when an ad account is disabled by mistake or a policy decision needs a human. This is a genuine operational benefit and the main practical reason it matters.
  • Baseline competence. Certifications are a floor, not a ceiling, but a floor is still worth having.
  • Continuity. Maintaining partner status requires the agency to keep certifications current, which at least implies someone is paying attention.

What it is not good for

It is not evidence of results, of seniority on your account, of category knowledge, or of judgement. The person who sat the certification exam may not be the person who runs your campaigns. And an optimisation score of ninety-eight is perfectly compatible with an account structured for Google's convenience rather than your margin — brand traffic inside Performance Max is the classic example.

Two better checks

Ask what recommendation from Google they most recently declined, and why. Every competent buyer has one. The answer separates people who run accounts from people who accept defaults.

Ask them to look at your account before quoting. Twenty minutes in your actual account produces more evidence than any badge. That is the whole reason we do a free audit first, and why the first-call questions matter more than the logo row.

Badges belong in the same category as certifications on a CV: worth having, worth checking, and not the thing you hire on. If you are comparing agencies, weigh them below what you learn from an audit of your own account and from reading their case studies properly. Our own approach to Google Ads is described on the page rather than implied by a badge.

Questions people ask before hiring

Is a Google Partner badge a sign of a good agency?

It is a sign of a certified agency of a certain size whose accounts meet Google’s health thresholds. It is not a measure of results on your account, and the performance component partly rewards following Google’s own recommendations.

What is the difference between Partner and Premier Partner?

Premier is capped to a limited share of partners per country, so it signals relative scale and a closer relationship with Google, usually including a named representative. It is a ranking rather than a higher standard of work.

Does optimisation score matter?

It matters to the badge, not necessarily to your account. Several recommendations that raise the score — broad match expansion, automatic upgrades — may be wrong for a business with tight margins or a narrow qualified audience.

Should I avoid an agency without a badge?

No. Small, specialist teams often sit below the spend threshold while running accounts very well. Judge the audit and the answers instead, and treat the badge as a minor tiebreaker.

Is a Google rep useful?

For escalation, policy problems and account suspensions, yes, and that alone can justify working with a partner agency. For strategy, remember the rep is measured on your spend, not your profit.
