Semrush Keyword Overview (US) and Meta Ad Library · 48 keywords (46 with a CPC estimate; 37 practice-area keywords used for the medians) and 265 ads from 146 legal advertisers · 3 November 2026 · How we did this · Download the data (CSV)
Most law firm marketing advice treats every firm the same. The numbers say otherwise. We put two datasets side by side on 3 November 2026: Semrush's US Google cost-per-click estimates for 48 legal keywords, and 265 live law firm ads from 146 advertisers in the Facebook Ad Library. Neither is something a search engine shows you in one place.
The short answer for law firm marketing budgets: your practice area decides almost everything. Personal injury keywords had a median Google click of $156, against $9.70 for the other practice areas. A single click on "truck accident lawyer" was estimated at $252.78. On Facebook and Instagram, the median live law firm ad had been running for about six months, about a third of injury ads offered something free (a consultation, a case review or no fee unless they win), and one in ten law firm ads was in Spanish or bilingual. The keyword data is free to download at the end.
Law firm marketing costs start with the practice area
The gap between practice areas is the biggest single number in this study: personal injury clicks cost 16.08 times the median of the 22 keywords in the other practice areas.
| Practice area | Keywords | Median CPC | Priciest keyword | Its CPC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | 13 | $156.00 | truck accident lawyer | $252.78 |
| Workers comp and disability | 2 | $22.65 | workers comp lawyer | $41.35 |
| Criminal and DUI | 4 | $22.08 | dui lawyer | $40.45 |
| Family and divorce | 4 | $9.69 | divorce lawyer | $10.88 |
| Immigration | 3 | $9.50 | immigration lawyer | $11.36 |
| Business and property | 3 | $6.63 | trademark lawyer | $13.68 |
| Estate and probate | 3 | $6.11 | probate lawyer | $9.90 |
| Employment | 2 | $5.55 | employment lawyer | $5.89 |
A few single keywords stand out. "Tax attorney" came in at $22.71, close to the criminal and DUI median. "Social security disability lawyer" was the cheapest keyword we checked at $3.94, while "workers comp lawyer" was $41.35. Across all 37 lawyer-search keywords with an estimate (the practice areas plus two general "near me" searches), the median was $13.68, and 11 keywords cost $100 or more per click.
Our read: for a family, immigration or estate firm, Google Ads is affordable, and it is the first channel we would turn on. With group medians around $10 a click or less, a modest budget buys enough searches to learn quickly. For an injury firm the math is different, and the question becomes how many of those clicks turn into signed cases.
The most expensive legal keywords
All eight of the most expensive keywords were injury searches, three of them the same car accident search worded three ways. In our view these are the searches where one signed case can pay for months of advertising, which would explain why firms bid so hard. At Semrush's estimate, 100 clicks on "truck accident lawyer" would cost $25,278.
"Attorney" barely changes the price; "near me" moves it both ways
Firms often split campaigns by wording, so we compared pairs.
| Keyword | CPC | With "near me" | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| personal injury lawyer | $112.69 | $128.80 | $16.11 dearer |
| car accident lawyer | $186.31 | $179.94 | $6.37 cheaper |
| dui lawyer | $40.45 | $24.60 | $15.85 cheaper |
| immigration lawyer | $11.36 | $9.50 | $1.86 cheaper |
| divorce lawyer | $10.88 | $9.35 | $1.53 cheaper |
The "near me" version had a lower estimate in 4 of the 5 pairs, but personal injury went the other way. "Lawyer" against "attorney" made almost no difference in the two pairs we checked: "personal injury attorney" was $119.22 against $112.69 for "lawyer", and "car accident attorney" was $184.89 against $186.31. We would not build separate campaigns around either wording. In our view, splitting by practice area and by urgency matters far more.
What law firms run on Facebook and Instagram
From our Facebook Ad Library study, we took the 265 live ads from 146 legal advertisers and tagged each one by practice area with keyword rules on the ad text. Our two searches were "personal injury lawyer" and "law firm", so injury firms are over-represented, but the mix is still telling.
60.4% of the ads were personal injury, 10.9% immigration (mostly two firms) and 7.5% mass torts and product cases (social media lawsuits, drug side effects, defective vehicles). The median law firm ad had been live for 181 days, the shortest of the four trades in our wider study, and 30.9% had run for a year or more. Only 2.3% were less than a month old.
| Measure | Law firm ads |
|---|---|
| Video | 37% |
| Dynamic creative | 32.5% |
| Single image | 24.9% |
| Offered something free | 28.7% |
| Phone number in the copy | 20% |
| Learn more button | 38.9% |
| Contact us button | 16.6% |
| Call now button | 7.5% |
| Send message button | 7.2% |
| Instant form | 6.4% |
| Eligible for Audience Network | 58.5% |
The Library lists where an ad is allowed to run, so the Audience Network figure mostly reflects Advantage+ placements being left on. When law firms offer something, it is usually a free consultation, a free case review or "no fee unless we win". Among the injury ads, 32.5% offered something free and 21.9% mentioned a free consultation specifically. In our sample, 69.9% of firms had a single live ad and only 6.2% had five or more; a keyword search only catches ads that match it, so large firms run more than we saw.
The Spanish figure is an opening. 10.6% of law firm ads were in Spanish or bilingual, and 22 of those 28 were immigration ads. Only 11 of the 146 advertisers ran a Spanish or bilingual ad at all, so Spanish creative is still rare, especially outside immigration, which leaves room for firms that serve Spanish-speaking clients.
One compliance point: 11.3% of law firm ads (30 ads, all of them injury ads when we read them) ran under Meta's financial products and services special ad category. That category removes age, gender and ZIP code targeting and requires a radius of at least 15 miles around any location. We cannot see whether firms chose it or Meta applied it, but injury firms should check which category each ad is running under.
How injury firms use Meta: our read
Injury firms made up 60.4% of the law firm ads we collected, but one of our two searches was "personal injury lawyer", so this sample cannot show whether injury firms use Meta more than other practices. Our read is that injury firms use Meta to reach people who were hurt but have not searched for a lawyer yet. Our data has no Meta costs, so compare it with search on cost per signed case rather than cost per click. Meta leads arrive earlier in the decision and need firm screening.
What agencies pay to reach your firm
Agencies bid for law firms too. Semrush estimates $62.83 a click for "attorney marketing" and $44.67 for "law firm marketing", up to 5.77 times the $10.88 estimate for "divorce lawyer". Firms are an expensive audience for agencies, so when you compare proposals, ask who actually runs your account and what written report you will get each week.
How we would plan a law firm's paid media
- Budget by practice area first. A family or immigration firm can test Google with a small budget. An injury firm needs enough budget for clicks above $100, or a tight local focus.
- Use Meta for reach, Google for intent. Google catches people searching right now. Meta reaches people before they search, which matters most where search clicks are expensive.
- Make the free consultation easy to take. Check every claim against your state bar or law society rules first: several US bars require a costs disclaimer next to "no fee unless we win", and some Australian states restrict personal injury advertising.
- Answer every call. 18.9% of law firm ads had no website link at all, and most of those used a Call now or Send message button, so intake speed is part of the ad.
- Track signed cases. Cost per lead hides the difference between a tire-kicker and a case.
- Refresh creative on purpose. Firms keep ads live for months; we would add a new angle every few weeks while leaving proven ads running, because we think that keeps results from fading.
If you run a law firm in the US, UK, Canada or Australia and already advertise, we will do a free written audit of your Meta and Google ad accounts, usually delivered in two working days and yours to keep. If you have not advertised yet, the same page gets you a free plan instead. Our Google Ads and Meta ads teams work month to month with no lock-in, a named buyer on every account and a written report every week. We wrote 48 keywords: 39 that a person searching for a lawyer types, grouped by practice area, and 9 marketing terms a law firm types when looking for help. On 3 November 2026 we looked each one up in Semrush's Keyword Overview for the US database, in US dollars. Two bankruptcy keywords had no CPC estimate, which leaves 37 practice-area keywords. We filed mesothelioma lawyer under personal injury. Semrush's estimate for medical malpractice lawyer ($9.05) is far below other published figures; we kept it as exported.
CPC is Semrush's estimate of what advertisers pay on average for one click on that keyword in Google Ads, as a national US figure. Real prices move with the city, the time of day, Quality Score and local competition, so treat these as planning estimates. "Other practice areas" means every practice keyword outside personal injury, excluding the two general "lawyer near me" searches.
The Facebook and Instagram figures come from our Meta Ad Library study collected the same day: 265 active US ads from 146 advertisers whose Facebook page category is a lawyer or legal service. Two searches (personal injury lawyer and law firm) each returned at most 150 ads, so this is a sample, and personal injury is over-represented in it. Practice areas were tagged from the ad text with keyword rules.
"Days live" counts from the start date the Library shows for ads live on 3 November 2026. Because we sampled ads live on one day, long-running ads are over-represented, and days live says nothing about how well an ad performs.

Questions about law firm marketing costs
How much does Google Ads cost for lawyers?
Across 37 US lawyer-search keywords we checked on 3 November 2026, the median estimated cost per click was $13.68, a figure that depends on the keyword mix. Personal injury was far higher, with a median of $156.
What is the most expensive legal keyword on Google?
In our data it was truck accident lawyer, at an estimated $252.78 a click, followed by mesothelioma lawyer at $222.28.
Do law firms advertise on Facebook?
Yes. Two Ad Library searches on 3 November 2026 returned 265 live US ads from 146 legal advertisers. 28.7% offered something free, such as a consultation or case review, and 37% were video.
How long have law firm Facebook ads been running?
On 3 November 2026 the median live law firm ad had been running for 181 days, and 30.9% for a year or more. Ads that ran briefly and stopped are not in a one-day snapshot, so a typical run is shorter.
Is 'attorney' cheaper than 'lawyer' on Google Ads?
Not meaningfully in the two pairs we checked. Personal injury attorney was $119.22 against $112.69 for lawyer, and car accident attorney was $184.89 against $186.31.
Can I use this data?
Yes. Download the CSV from this page and reuse it with a link back to the study.
