Local SEO in India: the map pack is worth more than page one

For a clinic, a showroom or a studio, three map results sit above everything else. Getting into them is a different job from ranking a website.

Media Puppies · · Updated

Local SEO comes down to one thing: if your business serves a catchment area, the three results in the map pack are worth more than the first organic link below them. They appear higher, they carry a phone number and directions, and the person searching is usually close and ready.

Getting in is a separate discipline from normal SEO, and most Indian businesses are losing it on basics rather than on anything sophisticated.

Google Business Profile is the product, not a formality

Most profiles we audit are half-built — a name, a category, a phone number, and nothing since. Complete beats clever here:

  • Primary category chosen precisely. This is the single biggest ranking factor in the pack. Interior designer and interior architect are different categories with different competition.
  • Every service listed individually, with descriptions. Each one is a matching opportunity.
  • Real photos, added regularly. Not stock. Interior shots, team, work in progress. Profiles with fresh photos get more engagement, and engagement feeds ranking.
  • Hours accurate, including holidays. Wrong hours produce one-star reviews that have nothing to do with your work.
  • Products and services with prices or ranges where you can. It filters time-wasters before they call.

Reviews: quantity, recency, and the words in them

Star average matters less than people assume. What moves the needle is a steady flow of recent reviews containing the words customers actually search for.

A review that says great service is worth far less than one saying they redid our 2BHK kitchen in Gurugram in six weeks — the second one contains your category, your service and your city, written by someone who is not you. Those sentences also feed what AI assistants say about you, which is why mentions matter more than links now.

  1. Ask in person, at the moment of maximum satisfaction. Not by email a week later.
  2. Ask what problem you solved, rather than asking for a review. You get a better sentence.
  3. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, without arguing.
  4. Never buy reviews. It is detectable, and a suspended profile costs more than the reviews were worth.

The sentence a customer writes in a review is doing more SEO work than most of your website.

Proximity is the constraint nobody mentions

You will rank differently in the map pack depending on where the searcher is standing. A business in one part of a city often simply cannot appear for someone searching from the other side, regardless of how good the profile is.

This has two practical implications. First, stop checking your rankings from your office and concluding you are fine. Second, if you genuinely serve a wide area, you need location pages doing the organic work that the map pack will not do for you.

The website side of local SEO

  • Name, address and phone identical everywhere — site, profile, directories, social. Inconsistency is the most common quiet killer.
  • LocalBusiness schema on the site with matching details.
  • A real page per service area you actually serve, with genuinely different content on each.
  • Fast on mobile. Local search is overwhelmingly on phones, frequently on patchy connections.

Listings that still matter in India

Beyond Google: JustDial, Sulekha, IndiaMART for relevant categories, plus any association or trade body in your industry. These rank for category terms, they get cited, and they reinforce the consistency signal. Pick the ones relevant to your category and fill them properly rather than spraying across fifty directories.

What does not work

  • Keyword-stuffing your business name. Against guidelines, and it gets profiles suspended.
  • Fake addresses or virtual offices to appear in more areas. Same outcome.
  • Setting it up once and leaving it. Dormant profiles decay. Posts, photos and replies signal an active business.

Questions people ask

What matters most in local SEO?

A complete, actively maintained Google Business Profile, a steady flow of recent reviews that mention what you actually do, and proximity to the searcher. The website supports those three rather than replacing them.

How important are reviews?

Very, and recency matters as much as count. Twenty reviews from this year outperform eighty from three years ago, and the words people use in them influence which searches you appear for.

Why do I rank in one area and not another?

Proximity is a ranking factor nobody can optimise away. A business in one part of a city will struggle to appear in the map pack across town, whatever the website says. Location pages help the organic results, not the map pack.

Do directory listings still matter in India?

Some do — Justdial, IndiaMART and a handful of category sites still carry weight and traffic. Mass submission to hundreds of low-quality directories does nothing and has not for years.
