Local business marketing has a specific shape that most generic advice ignores. Your customer lives or works within a few kilometres. They decide in a day, not a quarter. And before they call, they check three things: whether you come up when they search, what your reviews say, and whether someone answers. Get those three right and the ads work. Skip them and the ads pay for other people's customers.
This is the order we use for local businesses, from first week to ongoing, and the reasons for it.
First: the Google Business Profile, because that is the shopfront
For a local business the Google listing is the website. It shows before the website, it carries the reviews, the phone number, the hours and the photos, and it is where most calls originate. Complete every field, choose the right primary category, add real photos monthly, and answer every review including the bad ones. Our Google Business Profile tips go through each field.
The reason to do this before anything else: every other channel sends people to this listing to check you out. A paid click that lands on a profile with four reviews and no photos is wasted money.
Second: reviews, as a system rather than a hope
Reviews decide local rankings and local conversion. The businesses that win have a process: a WhatsApp message after every job with a direct review link, sent by a named person, at the moment the customer is happiest. Twenty new reviews a month changes a local business's phone volume more than most ad budgets.
Third: the website that answers the three questions
Where are you, what exactly do you do, and what happens when I call. A local site needs a page per service and per area you serve, the address and hours on every page, a WhatsApp button that opens a conversation, and nothing that slows the phone down. Local SEO in India covers the page structure that ranks for "near me" searches.
Fourth: paid search, then Meta
Only now do ads make sense. Google search ads catch people already looking for your service in your area; they convert fastest and should run first. Meta works for local businesses that people need to be shown, such as a new clinic, a studio with a launch offer, or a showroom with something to see. Both need the follow-up below to be in place or the leads evaporate.
Budget for local campaigns is a function of how far you can serve and how many people search in that area; an agency should size it from the geography, not from a package.
Fifth: answer within minutes
A local lead calls two or three businesses and goes with the one that answered. An instant WhatsApp reply, a missed-call callback within ten minutes, and a simple way to book a slot are worth more than any creative improvement. We build this as part of every local engagement because without it the rest is wasted; the WhatsApp follow-up sequence is the template.
What a local business marketing agency should do in month one
Fix the listing. Set up the review system. Install call and WhatsApp tracking so every enquiry has a source. Launch search ads on the highest-intent terms. Report calls and WhatsApp conversations by source, not clicks. If an agency's month-one plan starts with a logo refresh or a social media calendar, it has misread the business.
If you run a local business and want to know which of the five steps is the bottleneck, the free SEO audit covers the listing and the site, and the lead generation page covers how we run the ads and follow-up together.
Questions people ask before hiring
Does a local business need a website if it has a Google listing?
Yes, but a small one. The listing wins the first look; the website answers the questions the listing cannot, such as service details, areas served and what happens after you call. A page per service and per area is enough.
Which ads work for a local business, Google or Meta?
Google search first, because it catches people already looking in your area. Meta second, for businesses people have to be shown. Running Meta before the listing and reviews are in order is the most common way local ad budgets are wasted.
How do I get more Google reviews?
Ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct link sent on WhatsApp by a named person. Make it somebody's job every day. Volume and recency both matter for ranking and for conversion.
How quickly should a local business respond to a lead?
Within minutes. Local customers contact two or three businesses and go with whoever replies first. An instant WhatsApp acknowledgement and a callback within ten minutes is the standard worth building to.
