What is CPM, and what does it cost in 2026? Real numbers from Meta, Google, Reddit and ChatGPT ads

Every ad platform shows you a CPM, and almost nobody publishes what theirs is. So we went looking for ad accounts on screen, in 2026 YouTube videos, and logged every CPM number we could find, then checked them against the big benchmark reports.

What 1,000 impressions really cost: cover illustration

Key findings

  • CPM is the price of 1,000 ad impressions: spend divided by impressions, times 1,000. It is also CPC times CTR times 1,000, which is how you can estimate it when a platform does not report it.
  • Two Meta ad accounts shown on screen in 2026 had CPMs of $10 to $30: a supplement brand at $30 in the US alone and $10 for the US plus other markets, and a new toy brand at $25 in December. The same creator says brand-new US supplement brands can see $145 to $200.
  • ChatGPT ads were reported at about $60 per 1,000 impressions at launch. The three real accounts in our videos paid CA$26 to CA$34, $63, and about $120.
  • Display was the cheapest: one advertiser's Google awareness campaigns came to about $5.79 per 1,000 impressions over their lifetime, and WordStream's 2026 display medians, across Google, YouTube, Meta and other networks, imply roughly $5.85 to $8.38 in six industries.
  • A Reddit test that spent $80 bought 9,244 impressions, about $8.65 per 1,000.
  • Only 7 of the 30 CPM numbers in these videos came from a real account. The rest were rules of thumb, worked examples, reported prices and two unsourced averages.

CPM is the cost of showing your ad 1,000 times. The letters stand for cost per mille, and the sum is simple: what you spent, divided by your impressions, times 1,000. Spend $500, get 100,000 impressions, and your CPM is $5. Few advertisers publish theirs, so we went and found ad accounts on screen in 2026 videos.

We searched YouTube for videos on CPM, CTR and click costs across Meta, Google, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit and ChatGPT ads, screened 80, and kept the 23 uploaded since November 2025 that gave concrete numbers. We added 3 from our earlier studies. That gave us 30 CPM numbers. Seven came from a real account; the rest were rules of thumb, worked examples, reported prices and two unsourced averages. We then checked them against WordStream and LocalIQ's 2026 reports and OpenAI's help pages.

How CPM works, and how to estimate it

CPM, CPC and CTR are tied together. CPM equals CPC times CTR times 1,000. If your clicks cost $1 and 1% of people click, you are paying $10 per 1,000 impressions. That lets you estimate a CPM from reports that only give click costs and click rates, which we do further down.

It also tells you why a CPM alone means little. A $30 CPM with a 3% click rate gives you $1 clicks; a $10 CPM with a 0.3% click rate gives you $3.33 clicks. TrueProfit makes the same point: a $30 CPM can be a great one if it brings profitable customers.

Meta CPM in 2026: what the accounts showed

Antonio Ventre, who runs ads for ecommerce brands, put client accounts on screen. A supplement brand paid $30 per 1,000 impressions in the US alone over 30 days in April, and $10 where the ads also ran in other markets. A toy brand two months after launch paid $25 in December, which is peak season. He also says brand-new US supplement brands can face $145 to $200, and that a new ad account with no history launching supplement ads starts around $200.

CPM from real ad accounts shown in 2026 YouTube videos, by platform
Real accounts only. The ChatGPT client is in Canadian dollars (bar uses the account total, CA$4,459 over 170,000 impressions). The Reddit and both Google figures are spend divided by impressions as the videos state them.

The rules of thumb sit in the same range. Máté Hunyor uses $20 to $25 as his benchmark for US campaigns, says up to $50 can still be profitable, and calls $100 a sign to fix the audience or the ad. LYFE Marketing says some businesses pay $10 and others $20 or more. TrueProfit cites an $8.15 Meta average from 2026 data it does not source. Jason Gan says there is no CPM benchmark: it depends on the country and the campaign, so he compares each campaign with its own history.

One trend did come with a dataset behind it. Blue Sense Digital says Meta CPMs have risen about 20% to 30% a year across more than $150 million of ad spend in accounts connected to its business manager.

When CPM jumps

CPM is an auction price, so it moves when other advertisers move. Jason Gan illustrates it with a CPM that used to be $10 rising to $20 when more advertisers, or your competitors, enter the auction for the same audience: the same budget then reaches half as many people. Ventre's toy brand paid $25 in December, its peak month. In Gan's other video, a jump from a $10 baseline to $50 means something is wrong: he would stop the campaign, find the cause, often in the settings, and relaunch.

Raising the bid rarely helps. If CPM rises and click rate holds, the auction got busier and you either accept it or pause until it calms down. If CPM rises and click rate falls, it may be a tired ad, or a holiday that distracts people; check the calendar, then replace the ad. Narrow audiences make both worse, because the platform runs out of cheap people to show the ad to.

ChatGPT ads: a launch price and three real accounts

ChatGPT ads went from nothing to the most expensive real-account CPMs in our data. OpenAI started testing them in the US on 9 February 2026, shown below answers to Free and Go users. Two videos, from QuHarrison Terry and Amazon Seller School, repeat the widely reported launch price of about $60 per 1,000 impressions. OpenAI's advertiser help page now lets you buy by impressions with a maximum CPM bid or by clicks with a maximum CPC bid, and recommends starting click bids at $3 to $5.

Blake Bauer calls his client's CPMs fine for a sales campaign and poor value for a clicks-only one. Grow My Ads thinks it paid at the top end because it targeted people looking for a Google Ads agency, one of the priciest audiences there is. William Zhang calls his $63 CPM very expensive.

Google display, YouTube and Reddit

The cheapest impressions in our data were on Google. Jerad Larkin of Chicago Title shows $2,450 of lifetime spend on display and YouTube awareness campaigns for about 423,000 impressions, which is about $5.79 per 1,000, and one campaign at $83.32 for about 27,700 impressions, about $3.01. He suggests bidding a $10 viewable CPM and expecting to beat it. TrueProfit's unsourced table puts YouTube at $2.16. Chris Shupe, from his own and his clients' YouTube spend, puts the price of one impression anywhere from a fraction of a cent to 4 or 5 cents, which is up to $40 or $50 per 1,000 for the most targeted campaigns.

WordStream's 2026 display report does not give CPM, but it gives median click costs and click rates by industry, which is enough for a rough estimate.

Implied CPM from WordStream's 2026 median CPC and CTR, Facebook and Google display by industry
WordStream does not report CPM. These are its 2026 median CPC times median CTR times 1,000, so treat them as rough. Facebook figures are across all industries; display figures are by industry.

On Reddit, a presenter on HubSpot Marketing's channel ran a one-week test with $100 of her own money. Reddit spent $80 of it for 9,244 impressions and 93 clicks: about $8.65 per 1,000 impressions, an 84-cent click and a 1% click rate.

The same arithmetic on the rounded global LinkedIn averages cited by James Green, who runs B2B ads, a 0.5% click rate and a $5.50 click, gives about $27.50 per 1,000 impressions. B2B buyers are expensive to reach.

What a good CPM is

There is no single good CPM. The rules of thumb we heard for Meta in the US ran from $10 to $25, with $50 still workable for some. A better test is the one Gan uses: compare a campaign with its own past weeks. A jump from your usual CPM, with no change in what you are running, usually points to new competition in the auction or a tired ad. If CPM climbs and click rate holds, your cost per click rises in step; if both move the wrong way, change the ad first.

We would ask three questions before comparing with anyone else's number:

  1. What is it per click? Divide CPM by 1,000 times your click rate: a $30 CPM at 3% is $1 a click. A high CPM with a high click rate can still mean cheap clicks.
  2. What is it per customer? Judge the campaign on cost per lead or sale. CPM only matters through those.
  3. Who are you paying to reach? On ChatGPT, a music lessons business paid CA$26 to CA$34 per 1,000 and an agency chasing Google Ads buyers about $120. The audience moves the price as much as the platform does.

Our CTR benchmarks for 2026 cover the other half of the equation, our CPC study of 339 keywords covers Google click prices, and our Facebook ads cost study covers cost per lead. If you run Meta or Google ads in the US, UK, Canada or Australia and your CPM has jumped, give us read access to the account. A senior buyer will write a free audit of where the spend goes, whether your tracking counts real results, and the three things we would fix first. It takes about two working days and the document is yours. Our Meta ads management runs month to month with a named buyer. More studies are on our research page.

We found videos through web searches of YouTube for CPM, CTR and CPC on Meta, Google Search, Display and Demand Gen, YouTube ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit and ChatGPT ads. Of 80 videos screened, we left out 28 uploaded before 1 November 2025, 24 with no CPM, CTR, CPC or CPV number, 3 that were private or unavailable, and 2 not in English. We added 3 videos from our earlier studies that gave CPM or CTR numbers.

We logged every CPM, CTR, CPC and CPV once, with its timestamp, and labelled it as a result from a real account, a platform figure or reported price, a cited benchmark, a rule of thumb, or a worked example. We dropped two numbers: an unsourced 1994 banner CTR, and a legal-services CPC that the captions give as $5.87 where the written WordStream report says $9.87.

Some figures are our arithmetic on numbers the videos or reports give. CPM equals CPC times CTR times 1,000, so WordStream's median CPC and median CTR give a rough implied CPM; medians do not multiply exactly, so treat those as approximations. The ChatGPT client account is in Canadian dollars. The Reddit test had a $100 budget but spent $80, which is what we used.

These are creators who chose what to show, the real-account figures are few, and none of this is our own client data. The CSV lists every number with a link to its video and timestamp.

Questions about CPM

What is CPM?

CPM is the cost of 1,000 ad impressions: spend divided by impressions, times 1,000. Spending $500 for 100,000 impressions is a $5 CPM. It equals CPC times CTR times 1,000.

What is a good CPM on Facebook in 2026?

It depends on country, audience and season. Two real Meta accounts in 2026 videos showed $10 to $30. One media buyer uses $20 to $25 as his US benchmark and treats $100 as a sign something is wrong.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost per 1,000 impressions?

The widely reported launch price was about $60. Three real accounts in our videos paid CA$26 to CA$34, $63 and about $120. OpenAI recommends starting click bids at $3 to $5.

Which ad platform has the cheapest CPM?

In our data, display: one advertiser's Google display and YouTube awareness campaigns came to about $3.01 to $5.79 per 1,000 impressions, and WordStream's 2026 display medians, across several networks, imply roughly $5.85 to $8.38 in six industries.

Why is my CPM going up?

More advertisers in the auction (Q4 and peak season), a narrow or tired audience, or an ad people ignore. One agency says Meta CPMs have risen about 20% to 30% a year. Compare with your own recent weeks before changing anything.

How do I calculate CPM from CPC and CTR?

Multiply CPC by CTR and by 1,000. A $1 click at a 1% click rate is a $10 CPM. WordStream's 2026 Facebook traffic medians, $0.60 and 1.93%, imply about $11.58.
