Ask three agencies about Google Ads management cost and you will get three structures, not three numbers. Comparing them means converting each into the same shape first: what you pay per month, what it buys, and what it does to the agency's incentives.
The three Google Ads management cost structures
Flat monthly retainer. A fixed fee set by the work the account needs. Predictable for you, and the only model where advice to reduce spend costs the agency nothing. This is what we charge, and the pricing page says so plainly.
Percentage of ad spend. Typically a tenth to a fifth of what you spend. Easy to quote, and structurally awkward: the agency is paid more for spending more, which makes "pause this campaign" an expensive sentence to say. The incentive each model creates outlives everybody's good intentions.
Performance or per-lead. Paid on outcomes. Appealing, and usually worse than it looks, because it pushes the agency toward whatever converts quickest — branded search, remarketing, demand you already had — and toward claiming credit for sales that were coming anyway. Pay-per-lead arrangements deserve a careful read before signing.
What moves Google Ads management fees up
- Campaign types. Search alone is a smaller job than Search plus Shopping plus Performance Max plus YouTube.
- Catalogue size. A feed with twenty products and one with eight thousand are different disciplines. Feed quality work is often the single biggest lever in ecommerce and often not included in a low quote.
- Markets and languages. Each is effectively a separate account, with separate structure, creative and reporting.
- Measurement state. An account that needs conversion tracking rebuilt, or server-side tracking set up, costs more in month one than one that is already clean.
- Creative scope. Ad copy and direction are normally included. Shoots, motion and heavy production are usually not, and this is the most common gap between quote and invoice.
- Regulated categories. Finance, health, and anything requiring compliance review on every asset takes more hours and more care.
The ratio that matters more than the fee
Compare the fee to your ad spend rather than to other quotes. If management costs a large fraction of the media budget, most of your money is buying attention rather than customers. Below a certain spend level no agency arrangement makes sense at any price — not because agencies are greedy, but because the account cannot gather enough conversions to optimise against. Our own floor is published rather than discovered on the third call, and the PPC forecast calculator will show you roughly what your budget can buy before anyone quotes you.
What should never appear in a quote
Setup fees that duplicate the first month's work, charges per report or per call, fees to access your own data, exit fees, and anything payable to hand back accounts you already own. If any of these appear, ask what they buy. The answer is usually revenue smoothing rather than work.
How to judge the number you have been given
Three questions do most of the work. What exactly is in scope, in writing. Who runs the account and how many others they carry. What happens if you want to stop next month. An agency that answers all three without hesitating is probably charging what the work costs; one that deflects on any of them is pricing something other than the work.
The most useful thing you can do before accepting any quote is to find out what your account actually needs. That is what a free audit is for, and it is why we quote after one rather than before. For the wider picture across channels, what a performance marketing agency costs covers the same ground beyond Google. If you only want a senior buyer rather than a full agency, that is a different arrangement at a different price.
Questions people ask before hiring
Is a percentage of ad spend a fair way to charge for Google Ads?
It is common and it is simple, but it ties the agency’s income to your budget rather than your results. The problem shows up on the day the right recommendation is to spend less, which is a recommendation that model makes expensive to give.
What is a reasonable Google Ads management cost compared with ad spend?
There is no universal ratio, but the fee should be a modest fraction of media rather than a comparable amount. If management costs about as much as the ads, the budget is too small for an agency to add value at that fee.
How much does Google Ads management cost per month?
There is no single figure, because PPC management cost tracks the work rather than the account. Campaign types, catalogue size, number of markets and the state of your tracking each move it. A cheap quote usually means fewer hours or a more junior buyer, and both show up within a quarter.
Should I pay a setup fee?
Only if it buys work that the retainer clearly does not, and only if that work is itemised. A setup fee that simply describes the first month of normal account work is the first month being charged twice.
What is included in Google Ads management, normally?
Account structure, keyword and negative keyword work, bidding and budget management, ad copy, feed and shopping management where relevant, conversion tracking oversight and regular reporting. Creative production and landing page builds usually sit outside it.
